– STYLE ENVY –
a little chat with Abeer from Burqa Abori
I chose to combine between two categories (dialogue and inspiration) for this post because I wanted to use this space for someone very special.
I came across Abeer through social media and was absolutely mesmerized by her style. I could feel her personality scattered across every little detail of her work, which is what really drew me to finding out more about what she does. Merging between the concept of masks and the traditional Emirati Burqa, she seems to bind stories and feelings to her delicate creations.
Abeer is a magical girl with a multitude of talents, ranging from acting to drawing, designing and writing poetry. She’s Emirati with mixed heritage (from her mother’s side) and is currently based in the United Arab Emirates where she works as a counselor for younger students and creates Burqas in her free time.
I asked Abeer some questions and she was kind enough to answer them:
1. What sparked your passion for creating/ designing Burqas?
I love creating art and I love masks, so it was natural for me to have a passion for creating my own version of my culture’s iconic mask.
2. If you weren’t busy designing burqas, what would you be doing instead?
I’m actually a counselor at a school/ academy. I’m passionate about psychology, so if I wasn’t a Burqa designer, I’d spend more time learning and exploring the human psychology. I believe designing, writing and painting are God’s gifts to me to keep me sane. I have a lot to express through art.
3. Roughly, how long does it take to finish one design?
One or two days – some take much longer depending on the details.
4. How do you deal with creative blocks?
I don’t experience creative blocks because I write everyday, keeping my creativity river flowing. However, I do feel I pass through a cycle of the “depression” phase. In fact, I get even more creative, thank God.
5. If your style was a mythical creature, what would it be and why?
A mermaid? Ehm…
Fun fact: if you wish to know what Abeer thinks of mermaids, visit her social accounts.
