– GLE Dubai 2016 –
Common Purpose is a leadership development organization that specializes in cross-boundary leadership. Global Leader Experience combines face-to-face programme days with online learning to give the skills and networks to work across boundaries and become a global leader.
Common Purpose’s Global Leader Experiences was truly a unique encounter for me. The GLE module is set in different parts around the world including Singapore, India, UK and UAE. I wasn’t able to attend last year’s GLE in Dubai because of work but I was happy to have been invited to this year’s Experience.
For every module, a topic is discussed and tackled among the 100 selected students and senior professionals (invited to be mentors for the delegates). This module’s theme in April 2016 was Civic Engagement. The program took place online and offline in three segments: 1. Online introduction and preparation, 2. Meeting offline and attending the four day convention in different vicinity, 3. Online on the MOIC (Massive Online Innovation Community) website where Alumnis communicate and keep in touch.
The Experience was very educational and inspiring; not only did 100 students from over 30 nationalities meet under one roof, but we created a great memory throughout these four days. There were a lot of different engagement activities and we rotated group members in order to create a safe learning experience for everyone. For people who don’t usually do the first move when networking with others (like myself), it was a smart step to introduce members to each other without invading anyone’s space.
The activities made for an unforgettable journey, as designated groups worked on building the highest tower made out of plastic cups and straws – to creating a system that will be applicable to the real life civic movement.
On the final day, all groups did a 3 minute presentation each and it was exhilarating! We had a lot of positive response on our group’s concept and will hopefully be able to implement it in companies soon.
My favorite part of the Experience was getting to travel to different visit sites and meeting senior members of those companies, including Mediclinic, Dubai Cares and DP World – all of which had an important part to play in civic engagement in the community. The organizers did a great job with putting everything together as well as bringing different people in this Experience. I am really looking forward to seeing what more they can add to the upcoming modules.
